A Tale of Two Wellness Advocates: Fighting Breast Cancer

Two classmates and very good friends at the University of the Philippines in Diliman (Quezon City) lost track of each other right after graduation. One thing these two women had in common was wellness advocacy. After 40 long years, the two ladies got the chance to meet again and evoke pleasant memories.

Unfortunately, the sister of one of them has Stage 4 breast cancer which happens to be one of the most dreaded chronic diseases today worldwide. This illness is the top cancer among women both in developed and developing nations. There are around 1.38 million new cases as well as 485, 000 deaths annually. A large component of these deaths (approximately 269, 000) takes place in low and middle income nations. Majority of victims are diagnosed late because of inadequate awareness on immediate detection and lack of appropriate medical technology.

The Philippines has the biggest occurrence of breast cancer in the Asian region. In fact, clinical research disclosed that three out of 10 Filipinas will become infected with the disease before they reach the age of 75. One out of 100 will die before reaching this age based on a report by the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology. On the other hand, the Department of Health revealed four years ago that breast cancer comprised 16 percent of 80, 000 cases then. Just imagine how many more were added to these statistics. The DOH has not updated these figures in the Web since then.

By a stroke of luck, the lady with the cancer-ridden sister managed to find Integrated Laser and Complementary Medicine (ILACM) at the Medical Plaza Building in Ortigas. ILACM introduced Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) for cancer patients in Cebu in 2015. It opened this clinic in Metro Manila last year and will open more clinics in Dumaguete and Parañaque respectively.

The technology originated in Russia decades ago. A Russian expert from Moscow describes PDT as a “therapeutic technique for malignant diseases which utilizes photodynamic damaging of tumor cells by means of photochemical reactions.” PDT can help manage “malignant tumors such as surgical operation, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.”

  • It is a focused form of preventive treatment.
  • It is free from surgical risks, severe impairment and general complications.
  • PDT sessions can be repeated several times as recommended by the laser specialist.
  • Patients can look forward to complete tumor absorption into the circulation of cells or tissue after a single session.

The breast cancer patient had her first session last week and is now undergoing 10 sessions of MULAT (Intravenous Laser Therapy) after which an ILACM doctor will evaluate the woman’s condition supported by X-ray and ECG tests. This doctor will decide whether the cancer patient will require another PDT session.

For the meantime, the woman exuded a new hope in life which is quite difficult to see in a person afflicted with Stage 4 cancer. Perhaps, PDT can be the answer to this scourge and probably be the cure that medical experts have been researching for many years.
