Soon after graduating from their beloved university—the University of the Philippines in Diliman—two individuals who were both classmates and best friends to each other had parted ways pursuing their own dreams. Yet despite the difference in the path that they pursued, the two friends also share the same similarity—their advocacy for wellness.
It has been 40 long years since, but time and distance did not totally separate the two good friends as they were chanced to meet again and call on pleasant memories back as students.
However, in line with the happy meeting is a news grim to both friends related to the advocacy they were holding—one of them has a Stage 4 Breast Cancer, a dreaded long-term disease common among women of today. Both developing and developed nations alike fear of this potentially fatal disease which already took the lives of many and possibly many more. In fact, statistics show that there has been an increase of about 1.38 million breast cancer patients and the disease was said to cause the death of 485,000 annually. Of these deaths, a big portion of the fatality took place in low and medium income nations—similar to a country known and lived by both friends—a problem rooted in the late detection of the disease due to poor awareness and the failure to medically intervene on it on time.
Alarmingly enough, of the overall Asian region, the Philippines was said to hold the record of having the most number of people suffering from breast cancer. This was even proved by a clinical research which suggests that at least 3 out of 10 Filipinas are likely to suffer the disease even before they reach the age of 75, 1 of 10 of which are even likely to die even before reaching that age once diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology. Not too long ago, the Department of Health also revealed that, of the overall 80,000 cases of people having cancer, 16% comprised of women with breast cancer. The fear for this number to grow, however, is still expected which shows our failure to address the problem of cancer among our women.
Not giving up to the spreading cancer without giving it a fight, the woman who was said to have the disease discovered Integrated Laser and Complementary Medicine (ILACM) located at the Medical Plaza Building in Ortigas where she undergoes medical treatment. Initially introduced into the country through its initial application on the patients of Cebu sometime in 2015, ILACM use Photodynamic Therapy—still fresh in the Philippine medical industry, despite its decade-long use in Russia—in addressing known long-term health disorders like cancer to which, the one of two friends undergo with, in the hopes of treating her condition.
