Undeniably, many of people’s insecurities stem from skin problems. Those who suffer from acne, uneven pigmentation, or even just wrinkles from growing older seek out treatment to feel happy, comfortable and confident.
So it is for this reason that scientists and medical experts believe they have developed the solution to the problem with the state-of-the-art technology called laser therapy.
And laser therapy is fast becoming a rewarding industry with the mushrooming of salon spas, wellness centers and clinics that offer the service.
Laser therapy provides a safe and effective alternative to drugs and surgery. Most patients see results within 3 to 5 short treatments.
Lasers are fast becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for people of all ages and genders. A wide variety of conditions can be treated with laser therapy including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, blood vessels, tattoos, unwanted hair, uneven skin tone and texture, sun spots and much more.
According to research, even active acne can often be treated with lasers. This technology is over 40 years old but has been evolving rapidly over the past few years in particular allowing laser and light treatments to be more effective and safer than ever before.
LASER THERAPY AS COSMETIC PROCEDURE
Laser therapy is used cosmetically to:
- Remove warts, moles, birthmarks, and sun spots
- Remove hair
- Lessen the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, or scars
- Remove tattoos
Permanent hair removal – Using concentrated beams of light, a laser cosmetology technician guides the light to destroy the ability of hair follicles to grow new hair, eliminating the need to shave. There’s no need to spend anymore money on shaving or waxing! People are spending billions of dollars every year in order to get that permanent smooth, hairless look that is coveted around the world. Laser technicians who know how to do this have the potential to make a lot of money in a field that shows no signs of slowing down.
Tattoo removal – Laser tattoo removal is another aesthetic use for medical lasers. Tattoos are intended to last forever, but rash decisions made on an impulse or under the influence of mind-altering substances can lead to regret later on down the road. Lovers who get their names tattooed on each other and then break up also find themselves in similar situations. Using laser cosmetology, the ink of the tattoo can be broken up and removed through one or more treatments (depending on the size and location of the tattoo).
Both laser hair reduction and laser tattoo removal are services that have millions of treatments performed worldwide each year. This is why many aestheticians, cosmetologists, and career changers are taking advantage of obtaining cosmetic laser certification.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Laser therapy has some risks. The risks for skin therapy include:
- Changes in skin color
Also, the intended effects of treatment may not be permanent, so repeated sessions may be necessary.
Some laser surgery is performed while under general anesthesia, which carries its own set of risks. They include:
- Confusion after waking from the operation
- Heart attack
In general, a laser treatment is not painful or causes very little pain that is manageable for most people. However, for some treatments that do involve more pain or for individuals who have a lower tolerance for pain, topical analgesics can be applied a few minutes prior to the procedure to reduce or eliminate discomfort. Oral pain relievers can also be taken beforehand if one is worried about pain.
HOW LASER WORKS?
Fine lines, discoloration, acne scars, large pores, broken blood vessels, and age spots — you name it, lasers, or microscopic beams of light, have the power to help correct it.
Lasers use heat (and light) to stimulate the growth of fibroblasts, which are precursors to new collagen in the skin. More collagen means firmer, fresher, younger-looking skin. There are two main types.
Ablative lasers take off the surface of the skin and can result in scabbing, significant downtime (up to two weeks), and some discomfort. Your skin may be red, raw, and oozing, but once that passes, deep acne scars and troublesome wrinkles will be drastically reduced.
One of the hottest lasers in this category is fractionated laser skin resurfacing. (Fraxel is the brand name of the pioneering device in this arena.) Although thousands of microscopic laser beams (each one-tenth the diameter of a hair follicle) make pinpoint punctures in the skin. The process doesn’t affect the surrounding tissue. It has become popular for treating the signs of aging with much less discomfort and downtime than traditional, non-fractionated ablative lasers. Typically, redness lasts about a week.
Non-ablative lasers don’t break the surface of the skin and are generally gentler options, leaving mostly mild redness and irritation. Some work after just one session, but many take a few appointments to achieve the end results.
Some people describe the feeling during a laser procedure as a stinging sensation or the feeling of a rubber band being pulled out and snapped across the skin. AThe experience is different for everyone because everyone handles pain and new situations differently.
Many people experience less pain when a small area is treated as opposed to a larger area. Also people with dark skin may experience more pain than people with lighter skin tones because darker skin absorbs more laser energy.
If during the laser session, you experience intolerable pain, be sure to immediately let the person performing the procedure know so that he or she can stop and/or adjust the intensity of the laser.
However, keep in mind that lower settings will likely negatively impact the results of the laser procedure. The default settings are default because they are proven to provide optimal results. Often, if one hangs in there for a few minutes, everything will be finished quickly and effectively.
