Successful application of low intensity laser irradiation (LILI) in cosmetology is no longer new to many people. It has emerged as a new and dynamic area of physical medicine. LILI has been available for more than 30 years and effective for patients with skin diseases and cosmetology problems.
LASER or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) is the source of electromagnetic irradiation in the visual range with special physical characteristics. The special characteristics of laser irradiation allow concentration of energy with strict physical parameters and high potential of biological and healing effects. This makes laser irradiation different from other forms of irradiation.
In this modern world, Laser has been found out to be one of the most successful techniques in prevention of diseases as well as cosmetic problems.
Procedures of Low Intensity Laser Irradiation Biological Action
In the ageing process as well as occurrence of diseases regardless of origin and biological mechanisms, there is damage of microcirculation of blood and circulation of lymph or colorless fluid that contains white blood cells. The normal balance between cellular, intestinal, blood and lymph areas in the body is damaged (capillary vessel cramps, decrease in numbers of capillary vessels and their density, derivation of blood and lymph in the pre-capillary area, worsening of transported medium (flow of water). This causes swelling, failure of oxygen delivery to tissues, inadequate oxidation of metabolic products and accumulation, disturbances in the functions of collagen pools, accumulation of the hydrolytic (referring to dissolution) products in tissues, collapse of anti-oxidative and immune systems.
Positive changes in human biological tissues of the body under the influence of low-energy laser irradiation are anti-inflammatory effects, pain-killer, and stimulation of recovering processes. Application of low intensity laser treatment on superficial bio-tissues of the human body (skin, subcutaneous fat, fat pads and mussels) may lead to positive changes.
What are its effects on external bio-tissues?
- It helps eliminate companion and similar processes.
- It slows down ageing of cells and extra-cellular connective tissues.
- It promotes better elasticity along with lower density of dermis and epidermis.
- It increases thickness of the epidermal layer and connections by reducing peeling of skin layers and promoting cell division.
- It aids in skin reconstruction by restructuring fibrous collagen fibers through the reduction of colloid masses.
- It intensifies the amount of sweat and sebaceous glands.
- It helps in the recovery of fat tissues and increases muscle mass by regulating metabolism.
As a result, the process minimizes the amount of skin sagging.
Such effects can only be achieved only when it is practiced systematically. Initial results can be expected after 2-3 sessions. To fix the result, preventive courses must be made 2-4 times each year and 10 sessions for every course. Laser therapy and laser prevention of skin aging together with subcutaneous tissues of the face, neck and entire body is a dynamic process. These are performed by specialists: cosmetologists or laser therapy specialists.
In cosmetology, LILI is used for independently therapeutic and preventive purposes (mono laser therapy), and in combination with other physical factors. Comprehensive treatment of physical factors is carried out in two forms - mixed and combined.
Mixed form is the simultaneous application of physical factors on the same area of the patient’s body.
Combined form is a successive (at different times) application of physical factors. These can be used together daily with several options such as series; close to the mixed; alternating or during different days; and, as one course followed by another. Complex application of physical factors is an effective means to improve the effectiveness of said treatment.
In the practice of cosmetology, it is often recommended to combine laser irradiation with the reduced pressure air or mechanical massage. These methods are called Combined BARO-Laser massage and application-laser massage respectively.
The combination of these physical factors generate development of functional synergies, mutual reinforcement of therapeutic effects due to biological effects and complementary effects on various sectors of the same pathogenic mechanisms of diseases and dysfunctions of the body, which result in development of cosmetic defects.
Main principles of laser and physiotherapy combination
For comprehensive physical therapy, the procedure must be distinguished from additional points used for the treatment of diseases that weaken the immune system. Additional procedures are not difficult for the body. It is not advisable to combine on the same day procedures which cause conspicuous body reactions. These affect overall reactivity that generally leads to fatigue and irritation. Two general procedures cannot be mixed in a single day.
Avoid making more than two procedures in one day. Outpatient treatment is possible for a maximum of three sessions on different days. Patients should avoid complicated diagnostic procedures and research (X-rays of the digestive tract, imaging diagnosis that uses special X-ray equipment, and other techniques. These are also not compatible with same day procedures made on the same reflex zone (neck region, nasal mucosa and carotid sinus area) as well as projection area of endocrine glands which can stimulate overall reaction of the body.
Refrain from applying on the same day factors with similar physical characteristics and mechanism of action. The total dosage can exceed optimal stimulus and produce an inappropriate response. Likewise, do not perform day two procedures on the same because these can cause obvious skin irritation.
LILI can be combined with physiotherapeutic procedures.
Laser effects on the local area can be combined with general water procedures provided laser is applied first. Laser treatments come before electrophoresis. Magnetic therapy is applied close to or in a combined manner and precedes laser.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is preceded by laser therapy. EHF (extremely high frequency) therapy in combination with LILI has a positive therapeutic effect for combined, or close to combined method of application. Red spectrum of the laser irradiation may be combined with infrared laser radiation.
Physiotherapeutic procedures are not compatible with laser treatment.
IV laser and non-invasive blood irradiation are not compatible with certain complex processes. These include the following:
- Use of LILI and physical factors on same reflex zone in one day.
- Procedures that use factors with similar physical characteristics as LILI (local UV skin therapy in a single day.
- LILI with physiotherapy and Spa procedures of multi-directional action (heating and cooling).
- Performing laser treatment on the same day with several physiotherapy procedures if you cannot comply with the minimum two-hour interval between them.
- Laser treatment should not be carried out on days when a blood transfusion or sophisticated diagnostic examinations are performed.
Relative Contraindications for the low-intensity laser therapy
- Malignant diseases
- Benign tumors with tendency to worsen
- Blood diseases like leukemia and hemophilia
- Chronic internal organ disorders
- Active Tuberculosis (30 to 45 days)
- Acute stage of hemorrhagic stroke
- Diseases with instances of bleeding
General Rules for Cosmetic Procedures
- Cleansing is performed with special cleaning agents like lotions and gels. It is possible to use certain mild peelings occasionally minus concentrated acids and coarse chemical agents.
- Machine techniques use special cosmetics to smooth wrinkles and skin lifting that provides anti-cellulite effects.
- Light lymphatic drainage massage of the areas affected by machine treatment.
- Toning, moisturizing with the help of special face masks.
- For facial procedures, the patient’s eyes must be protected from direct and reflected light. Cover them with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol-free moisturizing lotion or distilled water.
- All cosmetic products must be selected based on skin type.
- Total treatment time should be 35 minutes (not including the preparatory stages of skin cleansing).
- The course consists of 10-12 sessions. These will depend on the combination with other technologies and wishes of the client. Daily sessions are preferred for more visible clinical effects.
- There is a "salon" session distribution scheme:
Week 1 - 3 sessions
Weeks 2 & 3 – 2 sessions weekly and 1 or 2 sessions per week until the end of the course made up of 10-12 sessions.
- Possibility of creating individual schemes combining different techniques. This should take into account the basic rules. The optimal course is 4 weeks. The maximum course is 10 weeks. This is scheduled 2-3 times every week.
General Face Lifting
It prevents appearance of wrinkles in a regular skin care program that includes first, second, fifth, and sixth types of aging.
Face-lifting techniques include the following components:
- Laser Puncture
- Laser Strokes
- Photophoresis (to trap small particles using the beam of light)
- Laser Photophoresis
Wash your face thoroughly prior to application of cosmetic products.
Low Intensity Laser Irradiation enhances permeability of tissues and facilitates infusion of the required dosage of drug into the body without interrupting or affecting its structural integrity. There are no side effects associated with this electrolysis as a result of the current electric usage.
Low Intensity Laser Irradiation helps in developing conditions for the proper infusion of drug components from the cosmetic laser machine and prolongs the positive effects. It heightens clinical and visible effects of cosmetic applications.
